Librarians who would like to learn some basic sign language to use this summer can download a free copy of a sign language training video from the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP) web page at www.cslpreads.org/learning-tools/diversity.html. Every System Youth Services Liaison also has a copy of the video and should be able to lend it to their member libraries. The copies were made and shared as courtesy of Lakeshores Library System, thanks to Rhonda Puntney.
These resources were developed through the cooperation of Rhonda Puntney, Chair of the CSLP Diversity Committee, and DLTCL.
Each year the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning (DLTCL) coordinates a summer reading program on behalf of Wisconsin's public libraries. Wisconsin is a member of the Collaborative Summer Library Program (CSLP). Forty-six states are currently members of CSLP. Through CSLP Wisconsin libraries are able to purchase high quality materials at low cost needed for the program. "Be Creative @ Your Library" is the children's theme in 2009, and "Express Yourself @ Your Library" is the teen theme.
The illustrator for the 2009 children's poster is David Catrow has created the art for CSLP's 2009 children's reading program. He is a nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist and award-winning illustrator of numerous books for children. He lives in Springfield, Ohio. Catrow's day job is with the Springfield News-Sun. He creates editorial cartoons which are syndicated in more than 900 newspapers. His signature zany illustrations delight younger children in his picture books. He illustrated "She's Wearing a Dead Bird on Her Head" (1995), named the "New York Times" Best Illustrated Book for the Year. In 2008 he illustrated "On Top of the Potty: And Other Get Up and Go Songs," and "Smelly Locker: Silly Dilly School Songs," both written by Alan Katz and published by Simon & Schuster.
The 2008 teen poster art was created by Brad Sneed Sneed is a lifelong resident of Kansas who lives near Kansas City with his wife and daughter, a dog, two rats, and a gecko. In 2007 he illustrated "Big Bad Wolves at School," written by Stephen Krensky and published by Simon & Schuster, and "The Boy Raised by Librarians," written by Carla Morris, published by Peachtree Press.
This year CSLP is offering an adult summer reading program manual. This is a pilot project, and the manual was not yet available for distribution with the Children and Teen manuals in September. If you are interested in paper or electronic copies of the adult manual, please contact Barb Huntington at barbara.huntington@dpi.wi.gov.

General Child Safety Tips for Summer Reading Programs. As a safety precaution and to protect the privacy of library records, children's reading records should be located in an area or accessed in a way that does not allow members of the public from knowing the children's last name. Contest forms that include children's addresses and/or phone numbers should be put in a container in which they can't be read by passers-by. If children's faces are used on library web pages or if contest winners names are released to the local newspaper, a parental permission slip is strongly encouraged. Many libraries that routinely take pictures during library events include a parental permission slip to allow the library to photograph their child as part of their registration process. This is not a legal requirement, but extra precaution is encouraged whenever minors are involved.
