Highlights of the 2009 System JOBS Projects


Partnering Agencies

Arrowhead - Wisconsin Workforce Development and the county Job Center. The trainer used to work for Blackhawk Technical College.

Projects


Arrowhead

Portable lab with 4 computers and thumb drives for use by the five small libraries, but not Beloit. Janesville will offer job skills, basic computer skills, and resume writing training for the public. Two workshops will be offered at all the libraries in the system All libraries, except Janesville, will have a staff training workshop on how to help people do job searches and basic resume writing skills. Janesville will continue their job support workshops and has already provided staff training. The System will partner with Wisconsin Workforce Development and the county Job Center. The trainer is already working for Arrowhead part-time and is providing the public workshops in Janesville. The hours will be increased to offer 20 workshops.

Eastern Shores

Will Purchase a small core collection of 6-10 titles on employment for in house use. Workshops for the public at all libraries hosting various social service agencies to explain their services. Staff training provided on helping people who are unemployed. Trainers would from collaborating agencies. Purchase LearningExpress. Will create brochures on library employment resources.

Indianhead

Currently implementing an LSTA project for people looking for jobs. The new funding will expand the project to add 10 more libraries. Will purchase resources for employment searching-WinWay resume software, WisCareers, adult basic education, GED prep materials, ESL materials. Will create an easy-to-use employment help web page at the system level that the member libraries can link to for their own web pages. Will provide training for librarians on how to help people looking for employment both in webinar and in-person formats. Computer training skills classes will be offered in libraries using a new portable computer lab with 4 laptops.

Kenosha

Will install software such as WinWay Resume on all work stations, and a subscription to LearningExpress test preparation service for GED, CT, SAT, TOEFL and materials to learn English. Kenosha County Job Center will provide staff training on how to use the new software. There will be public training sessions on how to use WinWay to develop a resume. The System will develop an employment help web page. System will develop user guides, on-line tutorials, fliers, and posters.

Lakeshores

One laptop will be purchased for each library for employment related activities. Subscriptions and software for skills like learning keyboarding, using a computer, job seeking information, resume writing will be purchased. System will help libraries create links on the lap tops to free resources recommended by partnering agencies. Partnering agencies will provide staff training.

Manitowoc-Calumet

Calumet County will partner with Fox Cities Workforce Development Center and it's Workforce Economics Division in Menasha. That unit will have a meeting for OWLS, Winnefox and Manitowoc Calumet to plan a joint project in terms of the training. Manitowoc County will partner with Manitowoc County Workforce Development and Job Center. System will purchase LearningExpress, will pay trainers, and travel costs for librarians to attend the training. The system will help libraries promote job fair opportunities and refer people to the Job Centers.

Mid-Wisconsin

Introductory computer classes will be conducted by Moraine Park Technical College at member library locations. The classes will include basic resume writing, using the Internet to help find jobs.

Milwaukee

Milwaukee Area Workforce Investment Board will provide staff training and at least 15 staff people are expected to attend. Classes will be offered for the public. Two trainers will be hired for eight weeks to provide three 3 hour sessions on resumes, cover letters, self assessment of job skills and interests, and resources. Sessions will be limited ten clients per session. Libraries will provide the computers.

Nicolet

Will partner with Bay Area Workforce Development Board which operates the Job Centers in Nicolet's counties. They will get a portable lab with 4 lap tops and a projector. The System will add 1.5 hours per week for 28 weeks for a staff person to schedule the lab. They anticipate offering 25 sessions with at least 4 people at each one, for a total of 100 patrons served. They will be LearningExpress's "Learn a Test" unit, anticipate having 3,500 hits on it. The System will link to the Job Center's web site that has extensive info on employment skills such as keyboarding instruction and resume writing.

Northern Waters

The Department of Workforce Development (DWD) will be meeting in libraries to work directly with individuals who are seeking employment. DWD will provide staff training. Libraries will provide monthly outreach for job seekers. The funds will be used to purchase new resources for people looking for employment or to improve their job skills.

Outagamie Waupaca

Staff training will by provided by the Department of Workforce Development. The system will purchase OptimalResume and library materials related to job seeking. The system will design brochures and bookmarks to help patrons with job skills and employment searching.

South Central

The Madison Area Technical College (MATC) will do staff training using a Dislocated Workers Guide. The system will develop a Wiki page focused on materials for job seekers. There will be 20 workshops outside of Madison for the public with staff from MATC and UW-Madison Writing Center. Libraries will select from a list of possible topics. Madison Public will also offer its own workshops for the public using system grant funding. Staff training will be provided by MATC and South Central Workforce Development Board. The system will develop on-line computer tutorials for LeaningExpress and Microsoft Office, and basic computer skills. The system will purchase LearningExpress. A bibliography of core collection resources for job seekers will be developed and participating libraries will have funding to purchase some of them.

Southwest

The system is partnering with County Job Centers, UW-Extension, CESA #3, Southwest Wisconsin Technical College, UW-Platteville, UW-Richland Center, and SWCAP. The partnering agencies will provide staff training and training sessions for the public. The system is purchasing LearningExpress, and resources on job searching and workplace skills.

Waukesha

The System will purchase LearningExpress, including the Spanish language section. Staff training will be provided by La Casa de Esperanza Workforce, Workforce Development Center, and/or the Waukesha County Technical College.

Winding Rivers

The system is partnering with the Wisconsin Job Center of LaCrosse and Tomah. The Job Centers will provide staff training. The system will develop a web page on job development. The system will also purchase WinWay resume software and Resume Wizard. Three portable lap top computers will be purchased to be rotated as a portable lab. Libraries will purchase new print resources on job skills.

Winnefox

Staff training will be provided by Fox Valley Technical College and Moraine Park Technical College. The partnering agencies will provide training for the public at the libraries. Libraries will select from a list of possible classes that they feel best meets the local need. Winnefox, OWLS, and Manitowoc Calumet are collaborating on the training portion of the project.

Wisconsin Valley

The system is collaborating with Indianhead on the development of webinars and a employment website. The system will purchase LearningExpress. The system will provide training for the staff and public by North Central Technical College, Nicolet Area Technical College, and the County Job Services.
