Wisconsin 2005 Team Nutrition Project

2005 TEAM Nutrition (TN) Training Grant

Program Summary

The Wisconsin 2005 Team Nutrition Project used a multifaceted approach to promote healthy eating and physical activity among school-aged children and youth. The first facet of the program was aimed at providing intense training and technical assistance to 100 schools/districts to facilitate improvements in their school nutrition and physical activity environments, and to develop and implement school wellness policies.

Embedded in the training and technical assistance provided to schools were the following:

  • The promotion of School Breakfast Programs to effectively address barriers to implementation of new programs
  • Teacher training on nutrition, nutrition education, and curriculum selection and implementation
  • Interactive homework that is incorporated into lesson plans in order to engage students and parents into nutrition and health assignments
  • Assistance to food and nutrition services staff to increase their capacity to meet the HealthierUS Challenge
  • Lessons learned in previous Team Nutrition projects
Outcomes of the 2005 Team Nutrition Project include:

  • A 15 percent increase in the number of School Breakfast Programs in the state, in each year of the grant period.
  • Significant improvement in the nutrition and physical activity environments of 100 Team Nutrition Project schools/districts, including the development and implementation of a school wellness policy, based on pre and post assessments
  • At least 100 teachers will be trained as trainers on science-based nutrition concepts and nutrition education standards and strategies, and will, in turn, successfully train teachers in their own school districts and implement accurate, behavior-focused, developmentally-appropriate nutrition education.
  • Publication: "What’s Right for Kids II – Improving the School Nutrition and Physical Activity Environments," a manual of steps and resources available to schools and success stories from Wisconsin Schools based on the outcomes of the 2005 Team Nutrition Project
