Wisconsin 2004 Team Nutrition Project

2004 TEAM Nutrition (TN) Training Grant

Wisconsin

The Wisconsin 2004 Team Nutrition Project had two major goals to advance the promotion of healthy eating behaviors over the spectrum of childhood, from early childhood through high school:
  1. Provide intense technical assistance and training to 30 schools/districts to help them assertively promote healthy student eating behaviors.
  2. Provide hands-on nutrition education and promotion of healthy eating and physical activity in childcare sites through a unique Childcare Garden Project.
Embedded in the technical assistance and training provided to the schools and/or childcare sites are the following vital elements: the promotion of School Breakfast Programs and effectively addressing barriers; teacher training on nutrition education components and curriculum selection and implementation; incorporating interactive homework into lesson plans in order to engage students and parents into nutrition and health assignments; and lessons learned in previous Team Nutrition project.

Outcomes of the 2004 Team Nutrition Project include:

  • 15% increase in the number of School Breakfast Programs in the state.
  • Significant improvement in the nutrition environments of 30 Team Nutrition Project schools/ districts and 18-30 childcare sites.
  • New and innovative nutrition education strategies integrated into the curriculum in 35 districts, based on a pilot project in two geographical locations in the state.
Products:
  1. Two publications: one on best practices for helping schools and one on best practices for helping childcare sites improve their nutrition environments.
  2. A nutrition education curriculum guide, with interactive homework strategies.
  3. A nutrition curriculum assessment tool.
  4. A report on the effectiveness of three approaches to improve school nutrition environments, based on three previous Wisconsin Team Nutrition projects.
