WSLS Historical Enrollment Insertion ChecklistThe Wisconsin Student Number Locator System (WSLS) data base expects one record for each school enrollment period for each student. Students who enroll in a school covered by WSLS for the first time are expected to have a WSLS record. Additional records are expected to be added to WSLS each time students move to new schools. So, for example, if a student enrolls in school A, moves to school B, and later moves to school C, then a WSLS record is first expected for school A, then school B, and then school C, in that order. If records are not processed in this expected order, then use the WSLS Historical Enrollment Insertion function. This function can be used to insert school enrollment records in between or prior to previously submitted school enrollment records.
In cases where a student has entered and left a school, entered a subsequent school, and for whatever reason the two schools did not keep WSLS current, Locate/Assign WSN transactions should be used (not Historical Enrollment Insertions) to add these two school enrollment records to WSLS. The key question that determines the type of transaction to be used is whether the school enrollment record you want to submit is more recent than any other school enrollment record for the same student in the WSLS database (not how old the record is). If the answer is yes, then use Locate/Assign. If the answer is no, then use Historical Enrollment Insertion. * All links to "More" go to chapters in the WSLS User Manual.
