Implementation of the Wisconsin Student Number Locator System

Date: May 4, 2004
To: Wisconsin Student Number Locator System (WSLS) Administrator
(via District Administrators and 2R Charter School Administrators)
From: Richard Grobschmidt, Assistant State Superintendent, Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning
Brian Wilmot, Chief Information Officer
Subject: Wisconsin Student Number Locator System (WSLS) Training

Please share with the individual you've appointed as your local WSLS administrator. This person will be the main point of contact with DPI regarding local implementation and maintenance of the WSLS.

In preparation for implementation of the WSLS in May/June 2004, the following types of training will be available free of charge to education agencies that need to report.

  • Instructor-led, WisLine Web Conferences. WisLine Web conferences are live, interactive sessions using a web browser and phone. These conferences will be held at multiple times on multiple dates which we hope will provide convenient access to WSLS information while minimizing travel time for district staff. To participate, districts simply need to dial in to the phone conference call, and point their browsers to the pre-assigned URL. The number of conference connections will be limited to a maximum of 200 so, if practicable, we are asking districts to coordinate with CESAs or possibly a couple of other nearby districts. Many CESAs have already made arrangements to have a conference room available for at least one of the WisLine Web sessions.
  • Instructor-led, On-site Presentations. On-site presentations are scheduled in Madison, at the Department of Instruction, and Brookfield (Milwaukee), at CESA 1. An additional on-site presentation may be scheduled in northern Wisconsin if there is sufficient interest.
  • Web Tutorials. Web tutorials will be available through the DPI web site as tools WSLS users can access in addition to or as a refresher for On-site and WisLine Web trainings. Web tutorials. These tutorials will also be designed to address WSLS enhancements.
  • User Guides. These guides will be available in printed form at the on-site conferences and can be printed from the website for the WisLine Web Conferences.

Training begins May 17. Both on-site and WisLine Web presentations will last approximately three hours and give participants an opportunity to view live demonstrations of WSLS and interact with presenters. We expect each district will be represented by their local WSLS administrator and up to one other staff member. Large districts may want to send a few more staff to training. There will be a limit to the number of participants per district and per session so total numbers don't interfere with opportunities for interaction during the instructor-led training. Note that user guides and (later this summer) on-demand Web-tutorials will also be available.

The following general topics will be covered at the training: WSLS overview, file upload process, mass student entry process, match review, and questions/answers. See the WSLS Training and Support Webpage for training agenda, on-site locations, dates, times, and registration instructions.

Scheduling priority for May sessions will be given to districts that have indicated they need to do the initial load in May and to districts that have been WSLS certified or that work with a WSLS certified vendor. Priority for WisLine Web conferences and the northern Wisconsin on-site presentation will be given to districts in CESA 3 to 12. Priority for Madison and Milwaukee on-site presentations will be given to districts in CESA 1 and 2. Any district may request either on-site or WisLine Web training. DPI work to accommodate all requests.

For more information about preparing for implementation of WSLS, see the April 19 memo. A copy of the memo has been posted online. Questions about the implementation process should be sent to dpistats@dpi.wi.gov. You may also get more detailed information about the Wisconsin Student Number Locator System.
