Incident Type Data Collection and Reporting
2006-07 and Beyond
"Incident Type" is the reason for disciplinary removal of a student. "Incident Type - Primary" is the primary reason for removal, usually the most serious infraction or offense committed. "Incident Type - Secondary" is any reason for removal other than the primary reason.

"Shotgun" means a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed shotgun shell to fire through a smooth bore either a number of ball shot or a single projectile for each single pull of the trigger. ''Rifle'' means a weapon designed or redesigned, made or remade, and intended to be fired from the shoulder and designed or redesigned and made or remade to use the energy of the explosive in a fixed metallic cartridge to fire only a single projectile through a rifled bore for each single pull of the trigger. | Other Firearm |

"Other Firearm" means a "Firearm" that is not a handgun, shotgun, or rifle. A "Firearm" is (A) any weapon (including a starter gun) which will or is designed to or may readily be converted to expel a projectile by the action of an explosive; (B) the frame or receiver of any such weapon; (C) any firearm muffler or firearm silencer; or (D) any destructive device. Destructive device includes: (a) any explosive, incendiary, or poison gas, including a (1) bomb, (2) grenade, (3) rocket having a propellant charge of more than four ounces, (4) missile having an explosive or incendiary charge of more than one-quarter ounce, (5) mine, or (6) similar device; (b) any weapon that will, or that may be readily converted to, expel a projectile by the action of an explosive or other propellant, and that has any barrel with a bore of more than one-half inch in diameter; (c) any combination or parts either designed or intended for use in converting any device into any destructive device described in the two immediately preceding examples, and from which a destructive device may be readily assembled. | Dangerous Weapon - Not Firearm |

"Dangerous weapon - not firearm" is any dangerous weapon that is not a firearm. This would include any weapon, device, instrument, or material, or substance, animate or inanimate, that is used for, or is readily capable of causing death or serious bodily injury, except that such a term does NOT include a pocket knife with a blade of less than 2 ½ inches in length (18 U.S.C. Section 930(g)(2)). |

"Assault" means behavior that causes bodily harm to another person if that behavior was carried out with intent to cause harm, or without the consent of that individual. Assault includes but is not limited to sexual assault of another individual, without that individual's consent. To use this incident type as a reason for removal the behavior must occur while on school grounds or while under the supervision of school authorities.

| Endangering Behavior |

"Endangering Behavior" is behavior causing the threat of or potential for bodily harm to another person, due to circumstances which show utter disregard to the well being of such individuals. To use this incident type as a reason for removal the behavior must occur while on school grounds or while under the supervision of school authorities.
This code is valid beginning with the collection of 2007-08 incident types. |

"Drug-Related" means related to use, possession, sale, or solicitation of drugs identified in 21 USC Section 812(c). These offenses do NOT include use, possession, sale, or solicitation of alcohol or tobacco. |

"Alcohol-Related" means related to alcohol. |
| Other Violation of School Rules |
SR |
"Other Violation of School Rules" means a violation of any other school rules not covered above. This code includes, but is not limited to, tobacco use or possession on school property.

| Assault and Endangering Behavior |
AE |
"Assault" means behavior that causes bodily harm to another person if that behavior was carried out with intent to cause harm, or without the consent of that individual. Assault includes but is not limited to sexual assault of another individual, without that individual's consent. "Endangering Behavior" is behavior causing the threat of or potential for bodily harm to another person, due to circumstances which show utter disregard to the well being of such individuals. To use this incident type as a reason for removal the behavior must occur while on school grounds or while under the supervision of school authorities.
This code is NOT valid after the collection of 2006-07 incident types. |
USES: This data element is used for public reporting as required by the Wisconsin School Performance Report law, identification of persistently dangerous schools under ESEA Safe School Transfer, ESEA Consolidated Performance Report and ESEA Gun-Free Schools Act Report to the US Department of Education, and public reporting and reports to the US Department of Education under IDEA and EDEN.
