  • Critical Issue: Promoting Technology Use In Schools
Many obstacles to implementation of educational technology still exist--equipment placed in not easily accessible locations, hardware and software problems, unavailable tech support. Teachers may lack time or motivation to learn technology skills. Professional development activites may not provide ongoing hands-on training or practical strategies for implementing technology into lesson plans. Initial technology funding may not be sustained to provide upgrades, maintenance, and ongoing professional development. Fortunately these obstacles can be addressed and overcome. This Critical Issue provides practical information for promoting technology use in schools.

  • Critical Issue: Technology Leadership: Enhancing Positive Educational Change
Knowledgeable and effective school leaders are extremely important in determining whether technology use will improve learning for all students. School administrators may be uncomfortable providing leadership in technology areas, however. They may believe their own knowledge is inadequate to make meaningful recommendaitons. This Critical Issue focuses on leadership qualities of superintendents and principals, responses to change, and effective uses of technology as major themes associated with technology leadership.

  • A Meta-Analysis of the Effectiveness of Teaching and Learning with Technology on Student Outcomes
In 2002, NCREL commissioned a meta-analysis to study the effects of teaching and learning with technology on student outcomes. That paper calculated 138 effect sizes using data from 20 research studies representing a combined sample of approximately 4,400 students. In 2003, the study was extended to include data representing a combined sample of approximately 7,000 students.

  • National Educational Technology Standards (NETS): Rubrics
The purpose of this publication is to define four achievement levels in relation to the NETS. The rubric was developed to assist state and district leaders in their efforts to measure and monitor the development of student technology literacy throughout the elementary and secondary grades.

  • Planning for Data-Driven Decisions About Technology
This resource, also known as Planning for D3T, will help school improvement teams generate a comprehensive technology evaluation plan and can be used by adminstrators for allocating resources and by technology and curriculum coordinators involved in technology infusion. This resource asks school improvement teams to evalute technology from three perspectives: the systemic organization, the teaching practice, and student learning.

  • Scoring Guide for Student Products was created to evaluate the content knowledge and the effective use of technology in communicating ideas and information that is evident in the products that students create with computers.

  • Teacher Education and Technology Planning Guide
This guide provides a framework of eight key categories for assessing the readiness levels of teacher education programs to ensure that their students graduate with the knowledge, skills, and predispositions for teaching effectively with technology in any setting.
