The Department of Public Instruction, the Division for Learning Support: Equity and Advocacy: Special Education Team is currently seeking an Education Consultant. The position is located at 125 South Webster Street, Madison.

Starting salary will be between $54,008 and $74,262 per year depending on qualifications. This position is in pay schedule 13, range 04. A six month probationary period is required.

Job Duties

Major responsibilities include providing statewide leadership, as well as a national perspective, in specific learning disabilities; education for children with disabilities; revising and interpreting state rule language; activities related to Response to Intervention (RTI); monitoring local education agencies (LEAs) to determine compliance with Wisconsin State Statutes and Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA); provision of leadership in the review and approval of LEA special education plans; and consultative and technical assistance to LEAs for students with specific learning disabilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of programming, curriculum development, and instructional approaches for children and young adults with specific learning disabilities; state and federal special education statutes and regulations; especially related to the reauthorization of IDEA 2004 and the Response to Intervention (RTI) component of the new federal legislation; the process and procedures for conference and workshop organization and development, data planning activities and retreats, and linking the data to continuous improvement; the process and procedures for special education monitoring; consultation with local educational agencies, parents and others regarding non-compliance with state and federal law. Effective written and oral communication skills.
