The Department of Public Instruction (DPI); Division for Reading and Student Achievement; Wisconsin Educational Opportunity Programs (WEOP); is currently seeking TWO full-time Education Specialists. These positions are located in Milwaukee and Racine.

Starting pay is $18.414 per hour ($38,448 annually). This position is in pay schedule 13, range 02. A six month probationary period is required.

Job Duties

Under the general supervision of the Director, the Education Specialist will exercise discretion and use sound judgment in providing technical consultation and interagency coordination in carrying out the mandates of WI Statute 115.28 (23) and, advocate and promote quality education for all students served by the WEOP Programs. The Education Specialist will provide direct services to program participants including; academic, career and financial aid counseling as well as personal support to program participants. Monitor and report on the progress of program clients. Conduct presentations to groups and participates in the program regarding activities and services offered through WEOP. Maintain records and documentation on all program participants. The Education Specialist will be responsible for general program related activities; developing a network of resources; developing activities for clients; attend various work related functions such as meetings, workshops and conferences; and be responsible for staying current on Federal and State legislation affecting WEOP Programs.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Knowledge of similar WEOP programs e.g. State Talent Search, the EIP, TIP and the WI Pre-College Program; state, federal, and institutional financial aid programs and the regulations and policies that are administered through private and public post-secondary institutions; low-income, disadvantaged, and/or minority students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds; effective communication techniques and public speaking skills to conduct and presentations and workshops promoting WEOP service offered to the general public; local middle and high schools policies and procedures; computer applications including: Word, PowerPoint, Access database, Outlook and the Internet; higher education admissions processes; counseling techniques; statistical analysis and reporting methods; and grant writing methods. Ability to establish and maintain effective team working relationships with co-workers, students, teachers, counselors, administrators, and outside agencies; work independently and responsibly in the coordination of WEOP services; and counsel students on the application and financial aid process for preparing and enrolling into a college or university. Good judgment and decision-making skills.
