Community Based OrganizationsOver the years I have made it a priority to work hand-in-hand with Wisconsin community based organizations to meet the needs of our students and ensure they have the resources they need to achieve academically. This page is dedicated to community organizations with the goal of providing useful information about Wisconsin education and the Department of Public Instruction. As always, thank you for your dedication to our schools, our communities and our children. If you have suggestions for how this page can be improved or have other thoughts and suggestions, please email me. State Superintendents MessageAs a result of roundtable discussions I had with leaders of community-based organizations (CBO) during the spring, summer, and fall of 2004, CBOs identified strengths and challenges facing them. Across regions, common strengths identified include a high degree of public trust in CBOs, strong levels of expertise on specific issues, passion and commitment to children and families, representation of community diversity, and grassroots-level work. Common challenges identified include funding, visibility, and lack of networking and connection among CBOs and between CBOs and public schools.Small groups also identified two priority recommendations, based on a partnership between community-based organizations and the Department of Public Instruction, that would build on CBO strengths or address CBO challenges and advance the New Wisconsin Promise. Across regions, CBOs identified common priority recommendations, including the development of a clearinghouse of models and best practices by the DPI. We are in the process of creating that clearinghouse and ask for your help in developing and maintaining it. Further, we are developing a CBO web page on our web site, which will include successful stories of community-school partnerships as well as resources available. For questions or comments, contact Jane Grinde by phone at 608-266-9356 or email her. DPI Program Links
