Summer Food Service Program

Description

The Summer Food Service Program provides free meals to low-income children during school vacations. More than 26 million children eat school lunch every day when school is in session, and about half of them receive their meals free or at a reduced price due to low household income. The summer program offers those children nutritious food when school is not in session. Nationally, the SFSP served approximately 129 million meals in 2008. Wisconsin served in excess of 1.7 million meals at 526 sites operated by 106 sponsoring organizations. Questions about the SFSP can be sent to Amy Kolano, (608) 266-7124.

The Simplified Summer Food Service Program

Wisconsin, along with the rest of the nation, participates in the Simplified Summer Food Service Program. What does this mean? In a nutshell, sponsors receive reimbursement based on the number of meals served (by type), period! No more cost justification. Camp sponsors will still be paid based on the number of low-income children they serve; however again, determining reimbursement will not involve a program cost comparison. Interested in becoming a sponsor? For more information please contact Amy Kolano and click on the "How to Apply" link listed below. SFSP training for new and returning sponsors starts late February.
