STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) Grant
The Department of Public Instruction offers an opportunity for school districts to submit an application for the 2009-2011 Stem Grants. These competitive grants are designed to increase innovation in science, technology, engineering and mathematics programs targeted to under-represented students. The availability and amount of funds will be determined through the state biennial process. The existing two-year grant program was funded at $61,500 per year. These grants are in accordance with Wisconsin State Statute Chapter 115.28 (46).
Purpose
Under s. 115.28 (46), Stats., the Department of Public Instruction awards grants to school districts to:
- develop innovative instructional programs in science, technology, engineering and mathematics;
- support pupils who are typically under-represented in these subjects; and
- increase the academic achievement of pupils in those subjects.
Definitions
PI 31.02 Definitions. In this chapter:
- "Academic achievement" includes the achievement of pupils in STEM courses, careers, or technical applications.
- "Department" means the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction.
- "Pupils who are typically under-represented in STEM" means pupils who are female, pupils of color, pupils who are English language learners, pupils with disabilities, and pupils who are economically disadvantaged.
- "School District" has the meaning described in s. 115.01 (3), Stats.
- "STEM" means science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.
- "STEM program grant" means the science, technology, engineering, and mathematics program established under s. 115.28 (46), Stats.

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction is pleased to announce the availability of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) Grants for 2009-2011. School districts may apply, individually or in a consortium, for a competitive STEM grant to develop, implement, and evaluate programs designed to provide innovative instructional programs, support students who are typically under-represented in STEM, and increase the academic achievement of students in these subjects.
