1. NEW DVDS AVAILABLE FOR LOAN FROM THE REFERENCE AND LOAN LIBRARY
"Check It Out! Kids in the Library" is a 14 minute program on DVD intended to help libraries introduce children to library resources and services. The program, hosted by a teenage girl, covers how librarians can help with information requests, the types of materials and programs offered, using library catalogs, and the basics of the Dewey Decimal System. The Reference and Loan Library's call number is DVD V-341.
"Going Green: Creating an Environmentally Friendly Library" is a 27-minute DVD showing simple tips and techniques for helping to make the library a more environmentally friendly building and contributing to community efforts to improve the environment. It discusses cleaning materials, furnishings, floor coverings, equipment and supplies, car pooling for staff, and suggests partnering with agencies to promote recycling and making available and promoting information on "green." Several libraries that were built as LEED-certified, green buildings are shown. The Reference and Loan Library's call number is DVD V-345.
Both programs were produced by Library Video Network in 2008 and have optional subtitles.
DVDs and videos may be requested from the Reference and Loan Library (R&LL) through normal interlibrary loan channels; by calling R&LL's circulation/AV booking department at 888-542-5543, option #3 (toll-free in Wisconsin) or 608-224-6169; by fax at 608-224-6178; or by email at
dpirllill@dpi.wi.gov.
2. ALAN ZIMMERMAN RETIRES DECEMBER 30
Alan Zimmerman, the DLTCL's Consultant for Public Library System Administration and Finance, retired on December 30 after 36 years of service to the DLTCL. Al began work as a regular Department of Instruction employee in 1972 as a research analyst and moved into other positions as his responsibilities expanded.
In Al's first regular position with the DPI he was responsible for the very first state aid calculations for Wisconsin's just-enacted public library system aid program. Al has been responsible for public library system aid calculations for every year of the program's existence.
Since 1973, Al has been responsible for state library data collection and reporting of this data to the federal government. Al is a recognized national expert in library data collection and has served for many years on the National Center for Education Statistics (NCES) steering committee on national library data collection. Al has received 18 national Keppler Awards and 10 national Lorenz Awards for timely library data submission. Al was also the 2005 recipient (along with Bob Bocher) of the Helen Eckard Award that recognized the quality and usefulness of the DPI's public library data web site.
Al staffed two legislative study committees on public library issues and one DPI library legislative task force. He helped provide data and policy options to these groups and helped implement the legislation that resulted from the work of these groups.
Al also handled financial record-keeping and reporting for Wisconsin's federal LSTA program and was very involved in the DPI's transition from the LSCA to the LSTA program.
State Superintendent of Public Instruction Elizabeth Burmaster said "Al's contributions to the work of the department and to the state of Wisconsin have been invaluable. We have been truly fortunate to have had the benefit of Al's considerable expertise--and Wisconsin library service is better because of his diligent work. All of us at the DPI wish him well in his retirement."
3. 2009 E-RATE APPLICATION DEADLINE IS JANUARY 15
The last date to apply for E-rate discounts that will start on July 1, 2009, is Wednesday January 15. However, the division strongly encourages school and libraries not to wait until this last possible day. Libraries and schools must install Internet filters to get E-rate discounts on Internet services. But, it is important to note that your library or school can get E-rate discounts on any telecommunication services without the need to install filters. Typical telecommunication services include costs for regular voice service or data circuits. The website for the Schools and Libraries Division, which manages E-rate program, is at
http://www.usac.org/sl/. The menu on the left of the page has an overview of the application process and links to the online application form. The DPI E-rate website is at
http://dpi.wi.gov/pld/erate.html. The DPI library division does offer some assistance in completing the application. Contact Bob Bocher at 608-266-2127 or at
robert.bocher@dpi.wi.gov if you have any questions.
4. ALA PROPOSES LIBRARY FIBER INITIATIVE AS PART OF ECONOMIC STIMULUS PACKAGE
Nine-nine percent of the nation's 16,500 public libraries now provide Internet access but many libraries lack sufficient bandwidth to offer fast, high-quality Internet service to their staff and patrons. To address this critical need, the American Library Association (ALA) has proposed to President-elect Obama's transition team that a major "Fiber-to-the-library" initiative be included as part of the economic stimulus package. An investment of this type will help provide the requisite short-term job stimulus, while at the same time help to ensure that our libraries have the high-speed Internet access they will need into the future. As the ALA proposal states, "Fiber to the library is indispensable to ensuring that our libraries can provide high-quality Internet access as the bandwidth demands of the Internet continue to grow at exponential rates. In brief, fiber gets our libraries to the future, faster." Bob Bocher, Technology Consultant in the division's Public Library Development Team, chairs the ALA Telecommunications Subcommittee and assisted in drafting the ALA fiber proposal.

6. APPLICATIONS ACCEPTED FOR SIXTH "WE THE PEOPLE" BOOKSHELF PROJECT
The American Library Association (ALA) Public Programs Office is partnering with the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) for the sixth We the People Bookshelf project. This year's theme, "Picturing America," explores the premise that a nation's literature, as well as its visual art, can be a window on its character, ideals and aspirations.
Public and school (K-12) libraries are invited to apply online through January 30, 2009 at
http://publicprograms.ala.org/bookshelf. A single application may be submitted on behalf of multiple libraries within a library system, school district or community. Individual branch and school libraries are also encouraged to apply.
In spring 2009, NEH will award 4,000 libraries - the most ever under a single Bookshelf grant - a collection of 17 classic hardcover books for young readers, related to the "Picturing America" theme, as well as Spanish translations of three titles, and bonus materials for readers of all ages. Successful applicants will also receive accompanying materials for programming, including bookplates, bookmarks and posters.
