1. WISCAT LICENSE: AN EXCELLENT VALUE FOR LIBRARIES OF ALL TYPES AND SIZES

In this time of increasingly shrinking budgets, are you looking for opportunities to stretch resources and extend your collection? Are you looking for opportunities to increase access to your library’s collection? Interested in a low cost alternative to support cataloging? Extend your collection and services to meet student, patron, and staff needs through the power of the Wisconsin resource sharing community with WISCAT.

WISCAT—web-based, union/virtual catalog and resource sharing software system—is built upon the AGent software from Auto-Graphics. The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Reference and Loan Library, administers WISCAT for all libraries in Wisconsin. This robust resource sharing system includes:

• Full-featured resource sharing technology including mediated or unmediated patron-initiated requests, patron status checking, one-screen request management, automatic lending policy checking, Z39.50 catalog status checking, and on-demand library-specific statistics;
• K12 reading level search;
• Reference and community-building features such as reader reviews, splash pages, and bibliographies;
• Locally customizable interface and branding;
• Cooperative Children's Book Center (CCBC) reviews;
• Z39.50 searching of union catalog, library catalogs, and the BadgerLink databases;
• Great source of MARC records for your catalog;
• Inexpensive option to meet K12 school interlibrary loan (ILL) policy requirements; and
• Experienced, free training and support from Reference and Loan Library staff is only a call or email away for ILL, customization, holdings updates, and downloading/ loading records.

The current edition of the WISCAT union catalog, one of the largest physical statewide union catalogs in the country, contains 7+ million titles and more than 32 million holdings from over 1200 contributing libraries. The catalog contains material in all formats, including books, serials, video recordings, sound recordings and other audiovisual formats.

The cost for an annual license is $200 per building per year. Find the order form at:

2. NEH GRANTS FOR LINCOLN TRAVELING EXHIBITION

The National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) is accepting applications for the Small Grants to Libraries program. "Lincoln: The Constitution and the Civil War" is a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Humanities, the National Constitution Center (NCC), and the American Library Association (ALA). The exhibition is based upon an original NCC-developed interactive exhibition of the same name, which will be reformatted into a traveling exhibition for libraries. The exhibit has been designated as part of NEH’s We the People program, exploring significant events and themes in our nation’s history and culture and advancing knowledge of the principles that define America.

The exhibition consists of separate, free-standing sections that span approximately 75 running feet. Text and illustrations appear on only one side of the sections. The entire exhibition requires approximately 1,000 square feet of space for optimal display. Libraries that apply are strongly encouraged to make a computer station or stations available near the exhibition, so that viewers can access websites with additional educational activities for all ages.

This initiative is open to U.S. public, academic, and special libraries with IRS tax-exempt status, as well as to state and local governmental agencies. The Small Grants to Libraries program provides a $2,500 grant to eligible applicants that meet the Endowment's criteria. The application deadline is January 30, 2009 for projects beginning July 2009. For more information visit the NEH website, http://neh.gov/grants/guidelines/SGL_Lincoln.html.
