1. NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR DSAC AND LITAC

The Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning is seeking nominations for people to serve terms beginning January 1, 2009, on the Delivery Services Advisory Committee (DSAC) and the Library Information Technology Advisory Committee (LITAC). Both committees have representation from all types of libraries.

The Delivery Services Advisory Committee provides a source of coordinated review and advice on the statewide delivery of library materials. The committee consists of 15 members who serve two year terms. The committee meets three times a year, with one meeting that requires traveling.

The Library Information Technology Advisory Committee provides advice on statewide library technology programs, including but not limited to BadgerLink, WISCAT, the Wisconsin Digital Archive, AskAway virtual reference services, digitization programs, information literacy, and other programs. The committee consists of 21 members who serve three year terms. The committee meets four times per year in Madison. Consideration is being given to holding some meetings via Webinar.

Please submit nominations by December 1, 2008, to Sally Drew (sally.drew@dpi.wi.gov) providing names, address, phone, email and a short description including the nominee's title and experience.

2. STATE’S TECHNOLOGY SURVEY COMPLETION RATE ONE OF HIGHEST IN NATION

A national survey of public library funding and technology access, sponsored by the American Library Association and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, was mailed to over 7,000 public libraries nationwide in early September. In Wisconsin, 216 libraries were requested to complete the survey. As of late October, only 30% of the requested libraries had finished the survey. However the Division for Libraries, Technology, and Community Learning (DLTCL) is pleased to report that in the final week before the survey closed on November 7, many libraries completed the survey. Wisconsin’s final response rate was 79.3%, one of the highest in the country. The DLTCL appreciates all the work library staff did to answer the survey questions. For more background on the survey, see the October 16 Channel Weekly at http://dpi.wi.gov/channel/chwk1106.html. Final results from last year’s survey were released in September and are at http://www.ala.org/ala/aboutala/offices/ors/plftas/0708report.cfm.

3. WEBSITE OF THE WEEK

Truman Library -- http://www.trumanlibrary.org/trivia/turkey.htm -- Did President Truman pardon a turkey? The Truman Presidential Library has received many requests over the years for information confirming the story that President Truman "pardoned" a Thanksgiving turkey in 1947, thus initiating a Presidential tradition that continues to this day. The Harry S. Truman Library and Museum is one of twelve Presidential Libraries administered by the National Archives and Records Administration.
