2. MORE "ADMINISTRATIVE ESSENTIALS" AVAILABLE
Three more chapters of "Administrative Essentials: A Handbook for Wisconsin Public Library Directors" are now available on the DPI website at http://dpi.wi.gov/pld/aecontents.html.
The new chapters are
-- AE 15: Policies and Procedures, covering typical public library policies, legally defensible policies, the PLA "Policies for Results" process, and the distinction between policies and procedures.
-- AE 16: Planning for the Library's Future, covering the importance of planning, PLA's New Planning for Results, utilizing Wisconsin Library Standards, county library standards, addressing technology planning, and an example of a plan outline.
-- AE 17: Membership in the Library System, including the benefits of library system membership, the history of library systems in Wisconsin, system membership requirements for public libraries, membership requirements for counties, and required system services.
The Administrative Essentials handbook is a Web-based resource designed to assist directors of small public libraries and those with limited administrative training and experience while also serving as a review for experienced library directors. Its chapters can help focus thinking and suggest resources when dealing with particularly challenging or unique situations. It also can be useful to public library trustees and public library system staff members who have a responsibility for assisting and supporting public library directors, and as a tool to assist in the orientation of new public library directors. Other completed chapters cover broad areas of public library service, the relationship of the director to the board and staff, employment issues for libraries, as well as developing and managing the library's budget. Future topics include open meetings and public records law, managing the library facility, collection development, and copyright law.
3. BADGERLINK VENDORS EBSCO AND LITFINDER RELEASE NEW INTERFACES
This summer EBSCOhost and LitFINDER will release new interfaces. EBSCO has added several exciting new features without drastically changing your searching experience. 4. SIX WISCONSIN TRIBES AWARDED IMLS GRANTS
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) awarded six Native American tribes in Wisconsin a total of $34,000 to improve and sustain their library services. More than $1.2 million dollars was distributed among 209 tribes nationally, to bolster library services offered by Native American tribal communities and Alaskan Native villages.
In Wisconsin, $5,000 basic grants were awarded to the Menominee Indian Tribe in Keshena and the Lac du Flambeau Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians totaling $170,000. These grants are intended to support existing library operations and maintain core library services. Basic grants with the additional education/assessment option - worth $6,000 each - were awarded to four Wisconsin tribes, the Stockbridge Munsee Community in Bowler, the Lac Courte Oreilles Band of Lake Superior Chippewa Indians in Hayward, the Bad River Band of the Lake Superior Tribe of Chippewa Indians in Odanah, and the Oneida Nation of Wisconsin in Oneida. The education/assessment option supports the hiring and training of library staff, consultations from outside professionals for on-site library assessments, and allows librarians to take continuing education courses, travel to give presentations, and attend conferences.
The next deadline for the Native American Library Services Basic Grants is March 3, 2009. Information on the grant program is available here: http://www.imls.gov/applicants/grants/nativeAmerican.shtm.
5. WAUKESHA LIBRARY SYSTEM LSTA PROJECT WINS A NATIONAL ACHIEVEMENT AWARD
In 2006, Nancy Fletcher, of the Waukesha County Federated Library System, used LSTA funding to develop a series of internet classes for Seniors with Hearing Loss. Her project won a 2008 National Achievement Award from the National Association of Counties (NACo). The awards program seeks to recognize innovative county government programs called County Model Programs. Created as a part of NACo's New County, USA campaign, the Achievement Award Program continues to embody the grassroots and local government energy the program was designed to promote. The main emphasis of the New County, USA campaign is to modernize and streamline county government and to increase its services to its citizens.
