1. STATE SUPERINTENDENT'S NATIONAL LIBRARY WEEK MESSAGE
State Superintendent Elizabeth Burmaster issued an editorial in honor of the 50th anniversary of National Library Week, April 13 to 19, 2008.
This year's National Library Week theme, "Join the Circle of Knowledge" sets a wonderful tone for libraries as centers of lifelong learning. From preschool story time, to grade school reports and college research papers, to job searches, financial planning, or health care information, libraries are a key resource for education and learning throughout life.
The editorial is available on the Department of Public Instruction news release website, http://dpi.wi.gov/eis/prmenu.html, and on the state superintendent's webpage, http://dpi.wi.gov/sprntdnt/index.html.
Copies of previous web messages from the state superintendent are available at http://www.dpi.wi.gov/sprntdnt/message.html.
2. STEVE SANDERS ELECTED TO NATIONAL SCHOOL NETWORKING BOARD
Stephen Sanders, Director, Instructional Media and Technology Team at the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, was elected to the Consortium for School Networking (CoSN) Board of Directors. CoSN announced its new Board of Directors following their March 8 board meeting prior to the CoSN Conference in Washington, DC. The Board is comprised of 18 public and private sector education technology leaders who lead the direction of the association. Sanders was initially appointed to the board to fill an open position. CoSN board members are elected by the CoSN membership and serve three-year terms.
3. ASKAWAY SPONSORS YOUTUBE CONTEST FOR TEENS
The Wisconsin Statewide AskAway publicity committee is sponsoring a YouTube contest for teens. This is a great opportunity for library youth groups to try something new, get some publicity, and prizes. The committee is looking for original videos between 30 and 60 seconds long (can be longer) that depict the AskAway service in a positive way; why they use and like it. A $150 first prize and a $75 second prize will be offered. Additional details about contest rules and contest forms will be announced soon.
Everyone's help is needed to make this a successful contest. Please talk to your young adult and/or children's librarians at your library. If you are the youth services/young adult/children's librarians please consider having your young adult group enter.
The committee is looking for Young Adult librarians to be judges! No experience necessary. If you want to be a judge in the contest please contact Renee Ponzio at reneep@eauclaire.lib.wi.us.
Please visit the Wiki site at http://askaway.pbwiki.com/FrontPage where you will find tons of information, posters, and other materials to help your library promote AskAway to your patrons. For more information about the contest, contact Renee Ponzio, Chairperson, Statewide AskAway Publicity Committee, at (715) 839-1683 or reneep@eauclaire.lib.wi.us
4. NEH AND ALA "SOUL OF A PEOPLE" GRANTS
"Soul of a People: Voices from the Writers' Project" is a collaboration between the National Endowment for the Humanities, the American Library Association (ALA), and Spark Media, a Washington, D.C.-based production and outreach company. The library programs associated with "Soul of a People" are funded by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH) to the American Library Association.
"Soul of a People: Voices from the Writers' Project" will give public audiences the opportunity to participate in library-sponsored humanities programs that explore the Works Progress Administration (WPA) Writers' Project through the American Guide series of state and regional travel guides, regional cultural studies, oral history interviews, films, and photographs. "Soul of a People" will also showcase works of important authors of the twentieth century who got their start in the Writers' Project. 30 libraries will be selected to receive a $2,500 grant from the NEH to present five different public outreach programs during the period of the national broadcast of "Soul of a People" (Spring 2009). The application deadline is July 11, 2008.
The application and guidelines for "Soul of a People" and complete instructions for registering and applying through http://www.grants.gov may be found at http://www.neh.gov/grants/guidelines/SGL_Soul_of_a_People.html.
