LAWS RELATED TO SOCIAL STUDIES
Elementary Grades
s. 121.02(l(L)1. In the elementary grades, provide regular instruction in reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, health, physical education, art, and music.
Grades 5-8
s. 121.02(1(L)2. In grades 5 to 8, provide regular instruction in language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, health, physical education, art and music. The school board shall also provide pupils with an introduction to career exploration and planning.
Grades 9-12
s. 121.02(l)(L)3. In grades 9 to 12, provide access to an educational program that enable pupils each year to study English, social studies, mathematics, science, vocational education, foreign language, physical education, art, and music. In this subdivision, "access" means an opportunity to study through school district course offerings, independent study, cooperative educational service agencies or cooperative arrangements between school boards and postsecondary educational institutions.
High School Graduation Statute
s.118.33(1)(a)1. In the high school grades, at least 4 credits of English including writing composition, 3 credits of social studies including state and local government, 2 credits of mathematics, 2 credits of science, and 1.5 credits of physical education.
American Indian Tribes and Bands
s.121.02(1)(L)4. Beginning September 1, 1991, as part of the social studies curriculum, include instruction in the history, culture, and tribal sovereignty of the federally recognized American Indian tribes and bands located in this state at least twice in the elementary grades and at least once in the high school grades.

s.118.01(2)(c) Educational goals and expectations
(c) Citizenship. Each school board shall provide an instructional program designed to give pupils:
- An understanding of the basic workings of all levels of government, including the duties and responsibilities of citizenship.
- A commitment to the basic value of our government, including by appropriate instruction and ceremony the proper reverence and respect for and the history and meaning of the American flag, the Declaration of Independence, the U. S. Constitution, and the constitution and laws of this state.
- The skills to participate in political life.
- An understanding of the function of organizations in society.
- Knowledge of the role and importance of biological and physical resources.
- Knowledge of state, national, and world history.
- An appreciation and understanding of different value systems and culture.
- At all grade levels, an understanding of human relations, particularly with regards to American Indians, Black Americans, and Hispanics, on available school and community prevention and intervention assistance or services and shall be provided to pupils in elementary schools.
PI.8.02(2)(L) Instruction. Each school district board shall provide instruction as follows:
Grades K-4
PI 8.01(2)(L)1. In grades kindergarten through 4, regular instruction shall be provided in reading, language arts, social studies, mathematics, science, health, physical education, art, and music. In this subdivision, "regular instruction" means instruction each week for the entire school term in sufficient frequency and length to achieve the objectives and allocation of instructional time identified in the curriculum plans developed and adopted under par. (k).
Grades K-8
PI 8.01(2)(L)2. In grades kindergarten through 8, include instruction in the social studies curriculum in the history, culture and tribal sovereignty of the federally recognized American Indian tribes and bands located in the state in at least 2 grade levels and in at least one grade level in grade 9 through 12 beginning September 1, 1991.

Grades 9-12
PI 8.01(2)(L)6. In grade 9 through 12, access shall be provided without charge for tuition, to an educational program which enables pupils each year to study English, social studies, mathematics, science, vocational education, foreign language, physical education, art and music. The school district board shall make all courses as widely available to all pupils as possible, however an individual pupil's scheduling conflict does not constitute denial of access to a course.
