Art and Design Education-Terrace Town 2000

Dane County fourth-graders build models of their communities

terrace town 2000 logoAbout 500 fourth-graders from 20 Dane County schools converged on the Monona Terrace Jan. 21 & 22, each bringing a unique vision of their communities. Together the students built an 8000 square foot community, using cardboard buildings they created during the fall semester.

Terrace Town 2000, which was open to the public on Jan. 22, featured local architects, educators, city planners, and environmentalists serving as student mentors. The goal of the event was to give students the opportunity to learn about community planning and how to apply it across curriculum boundaries.

Other activities were: Bob Kann performing, "If I Were a Building: Frank Lloyd Wright and the Personality of Places"; "Build it Wright" architectural blocks activity presented by Kurt Roessler, Taliesin Architects; a demonstration of Froebel Blocks, which were Wright's favorite childhood toys; a "Block Kids" building contest sponsored by the National Association of Women in Construction; and free family tours of Monona Terrace.
