Art and Design Education-Program Standards

Program Standards provide guidance to school districts on requirements for teachers, curriculum and instruction. These are referred to as the Wisconsin Educational Standards. Standards J, K, and L refer specifically to the arts. man with video cameraStandard K deals with curriculum requirements and Standard L refers to reguirements for instruction.

In general, these standards require instruction in art and design be taught by teachers certified to teach art based on a written, sequential curriculum. All students in grades K-6 are required to have instruction in art and design each week for the entire year. Art and design must be available to students every year in grades 7-12. No number of minutes of instruction are stated in the law for any subject area but the recommended minimum instruction time for art and design is 90 minutes a week (usually two 45-minute sessions). Standards J, K, and L can be found in the appendix of "A Guide to Curriculum Planning in Art Education" and in a publication titled "Wisconsin Educational Standards: A blueprint for excellence."
