School districts in Wisconsin are required to have locally approved curriculum in art and design education that specifies objectives, course content, course sequence, resources, specified instructional time to meet the curriculum, and a program evaluation method. Details of these requirements are contained in the Administrative Rule PI 8.01 (2) (k).2.curriculum guide

A Guide to Curriculum Planning in Art Education, 2nd edition, 1995, includes studio arts, design arts, cultural arts, and visual thinking. It is available from the DPI Publications Department.

Wisconsin Develops a State Curriculum Guide for Design Education

The Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction developed a Guide to Curriculum Planning in Design Education. Believed to be the first state curriculum guide for design education in the United States, it includes sections on the design process and four areas of design including objects, environments, information, and event design. This guide is a companion guide to the 1995 Guide to Curriculum Planning in Art Education. That guide outlined four areas of arts education including studio arts, design arts, cultural arts, and visual communication. The new guide will expand on the design arts section of the original guide as well as the visual communication area.
