    Introduces Linux with a focus on system administration skills and application in computer security. Topics include installation, file and directory management, command execution, input/output redirection and pipes, shell scripts, network services, security, troubleshooting and the X Window system. Prerequisite: Basic knowledge of Windows operating system.
  • iPhone/iPad Applications Development with iOS 5 for Teachers
    Introduces programming simple iPhone and iPad applications using Cocoa Touch and Objective-C. Students will learn basic Objective-C concepts, iPhone programming basics, and use the SDK environment on Apple Macintosh computers with OS X as a development platform. Design concepts and programming tools will be integrated with an emphasis on developing and deploying iPhone and iPad applications under iOS-5. Prerequisite: It is suggested that attendees have some background in Object Oriented programming languages such as Java, Ruby on Rails, Visual Basic.NET, C# or PHP.

  • Android Application Development for Teachers
    This course introduces developing applications for Android devices. All the required software is free, including the Android emulator. It is not necessary to own an Android device, though the applications developed in the course can be deployed to one. We will take up Android layout an dinput widgets, both in XML and programmatically; menus and dialogs; gesture detection; graphics and the Android drawing API; database access with SQLite and file IO; location-based services (geo-location); and device dependency issues. Teachers will be provided with lecture and lab materials to use in an introductory class for Android Application Development. Prerequisite: Familiarity with Java and Eclipse (or willingness to learn them quickly) is assumed.

July 30 - August 12 Online Teaching Workshop
  • This online course is designed for educators in a K-12 setting who are currently teaching, designing or wanting to obtain additional information to facilitate an online learning environment. Over the course of the week, we will be looking into two main components of a virtual classroom. One will be the learning coummunity as a whole and the second will be teaching and learning in a virtual community. This workshlop would assist teachers in meeting Wisconsin state mandates for requried professional development and fulfilling the 30-hour online training required prior to teaching online courses within a school district. The course will be designed through readings, discussions, exploring course management systems (CMS) and group collaboration.
