Hearing

Students who are deaf or hard of hearing have limited access to the language and information. This impacts their use of academic language - the language of testing. Test questions may be difficult for these students because of the form of the questions. Suggestions to improve AYP for these students include:

  • Practice with test items to support the student's understanding of the test format.
  • Directions given on each section should be clear. Make sure the student understands the directions. Have the student repeat the directions.
  • Make sure that any assistive listening devices (e.g., personal hearing aids, FM systems, cochlear implants) are functioning properly.
  • For students who use sign language to communicate (this includes receptive only use, or both receptive and expressive use of sign language):
    • Make sure that the person doing the signing is competent in the signed communication of the child
    • Be sure that the person doing the signing understands what he/she can and cannot do in communicating (e.g., what can be explained or paraphrased and what cannot) with the child so that the test is not invalidated.
  • Allow for extended time.
  • Test in a room with comfortable back lighting and seat the student so that he/she is not facing a window.
